Exhibitions
Beyond the Face is an exhibition that gives insight into Anja Resman’s eponymous professional debut film, created using the stop motion puppet animation technique. Animation is based on many sub-genres of visual art, such as drawing, design, and photography, which shape its visual language and artistic style. The illusion of movement created by well-executed animation
can obscure the specifics of the production technique; therefore, animation exhibitions are valuable as they allow for a new perception of animation through the prism of visual art.
The motivation for the film is based on the words of Amanda Richardson "In a world where everyone wears a mask, it’s a privilege to see a soul". The story is told through the eyes of a young man reminiscing about his traumatic upbringing and the loss of his childhood when his father put an expressionless mask on his face. His decision to remove the mask leads him into a dimension that combines the perspectives of a child and an adult, but not without consequences.
The exhibition showcases the sets of the old town street, which draws its aesthetics from various Slovenian towns, rooms of the old town apartment with intricate miniature props, and deftly crafted puppets. Beyond the Face explores general insensitivity in contemporary society while using symbolic language and recalling childhood curiosity to point to disappearing values.
